The May Laws introduced by Tsar Alexander III of Russia in 1882 banned Jews from rural areas and towns of fewer than ten thousand people.

German Goldenshteyn, or Goldenshtayn (2 September 1934 – June 10, 2006) was born in the Bessarabian shtetl of Otaci, then in Romania, now in Moldova.
In 1888, (although this date is still used in all publicity material and for Centenary celebrations, research at Public Records Office in Kew has indicated that they arrived in 1890) Harris and Judith Grodzinski, bakers by trade, joined many members of the Jewish community in Tsarist Lithuania in migrating westward from Voronova - a shtetl near Lida, currently Belarus, establishing themselves in the East End of London.
"It is Burning", (Hebrew, העיירה בוערת, literally "our little town is burning", a reference to a shtetl, Yiddish, אונדזער שטעטל ברענט our shtetl is burning) is a Yiddish poem–song written in 1938 by Mordechai Gebirtig.
She understood what her audiences wanted, and regularly finished her concerts with a medley called “Shtetlakh” that included songs about Eastern European shtetls such as Zlatopol, Moliev, and Belz, concluding with the song “God Bless America.”
She is the author of Durkh Kindershe Oygn (Through the Eyes of Childhood), published in 1955 and dedicated to her family, who were killed by the Nazis in the shtetl of Monastrishtsh (now Monastyryska, Ukraine) in 1941, as well as six volumes of poetry in Yiddish, her mother tongue, much of it about her experience of observing the Holocaust from the safety of the United States.

Large memorials to the destroyed shtetls of Lithuania and Lida, and victims of the Babi Yar massacre, feature prominently along the central avenue of the western section of the cemetery.
