In April 1993, and then Richard Court Liberal State Government announced that the Workshops would be eventually closed.

Fifty-seven out of an intended sixty-five locomotives were built by the Midland Railway Workshops, Newport Workshops, Islington Workshops and Clyde Engineering between 1943 and 1945.
In 1995, ownership of B6 was transferred to the then Shire of Swan, and in 1999 the locomotive was moved to the former Midland Railway Workshops, for storage in the custody of Rail Heritage WA.
Parts of the Midland Railway Workshops site are planned to house a campus of Curtin University and are already home to a large Western Australian Police Operations Centre, as well as other projects.
