Beetham and his crew bailed out, landing by parachute near East Kirkby; Beetham then joined the Caterpillar Club.
The memorandum of understanding establishing the unit was signed in 1979 by the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy and the unit came into existence on 29 January 1981 with Sir Michael Beetham in attendance.
