Among the composers who wrote music for the ensemble are Pierre Boulez, Brian Ferneyhough, Vinko Globokar, Gérard Grisey, Heinz Holliger, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, Steve Reich, Dieter Schnebel, and Hans Zender.
In 1980, he began studying music composition, first in Graz with A. Dobrowolsky and Gösta Neuwirth, then, from 1982–1990, with Gösta Neuwirth and Frank Michael Beyer at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, later with Hans Zender in Frankfurt.
He studied piano with Michael Leuschner at the Freiburg Musikhochschule, and later studied in master classes with Aloys Kontarsky, for piano, and Hans Zender und Johannes Kalitzke for conducting.
