The municipality is divided into the barrios of Angeles, Berros, Cañadón, Durruthy, Este, Flores, Macabi, Mulas, nuevo Banes, Oeste, Retrete, Río Seco, Samá (includes Guardalavaca), Marcané, Veguitas and Yaguajay.
Tourism has only recently begun to be developed, offering beach resorts in the outskirts of the region, with a number of hotels around the Guardalavaca area, Playa Pesquero, and Cayo Saetia.
Some of its most popular destinations are the north coast beaches like Playa Guardalavaca and Guardalavaca, both natural white sand beaches in the bordering municipality of Banes.
The town is a hefty 800-kilometre trek from Havana and an hour's drive along poor roads from both Holguín (which boasts an international airport) and the pristine beaches of Guardalavaca (home to many all-inclusive resorts).
