Conradin was born in Wolfstein, Bavaria, to Conrad IV of Germany and Elisabeth of Wittelsbach.

Although his father had entrusted him to the guardianship of the church, Pope Innocent IV pursued Conradin with the same relentless hatred he had against his grandfather Frederick II, and attempted to bestow the kingdom of Sicily on a foreign prince.

While the rightful heir to the kingdom was Frederick's legitimate grandson Conradin, he was young and safely across the Alps in Bavaria.
On 8 September 1268, Gertrude's son Frederick, who had accompanied Conradin on his Italian expedition, was captured in Astura to the south of Anzio.
By 1271, Konrad married his second wife, Sophie (b. ca. 1259 - d. 24 August 1318), daughter of Dietrich the Wise, Margrave of Landsberg (second son of Henry III, Margrave of Meissen) and — according to some sources — widow of the last legitimate male member of the House of Hohenstaufen, Conradin, King of Sicily and Jerusalen.
In 1874, he is awarded a stipend at the Biningueci competition for La sconfitta di Corradino di Svevia a Tagliacozzo (Defeat of Conradin, Duke of Swabia, at the Battle of Tagliacozzo) and this allowed him to continue studies in Rome and Venice.
On 24 October 1266 was issued in Augsburg by Duke Louis II of Upper Bavaria a settlement, under which he pledged several possessions on behalf of his ward and nephew Conradin, King of Sicily and Jerusalem.
