In 1946, the Australian Cabinet decided that the RAN would remain in control of all hydrographic operations in both Australian waters and areas of Australian interest.
The growth of the ministry in the 1940s and 1950s made this increasingly impractical, and in 1956 Liberal Prime Minister Robert Menzies created a two-tier ministry, with only senior ministers holding Cabinet rank.

The Constitution of Australia does not recognise the Cabinet as a legal entity, and its decisions have no legal force.
Made up of members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and the New South Wales Legislative Council, the Cabinet is similar in structure and role to the Cabinet of Australia.
