The museum was founded in 1971 and originally housed in the Bronx County Courthouse.
The school was able to support students’ needs through its flexible structure, as well as partnerships with the International Rescue Committee, a New York-based refugee relief organization, and the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

Amongst his many honors, Veca has thrice received the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in painting and has carried out artist residencies for institutions such as the Bronx Museum, the MacDowell Colony, and Villa Montalvo.
