Dato' Dr Abdullah resigned from his position as the Deputy Rector of KUIM when he was ask to be a Barisan Nasional candidate for the Parlimen of Besut in the 2004 General Election.

He was awarded Philosophy Doctorate in the field of Islamic Missionary and Tasawuf from Kent University, England in 1986.
