Designed by New York architect William Appleton Potter, the original Berkshire Athenaeum building was erected in 1874-1876 as a gift from railway magnate and native son Thomas Allen.
William Appleton Potter and Robert Anderson built the house in the mid-nineteenth century as an excellent example of American Shingle Style architecture.
The church was built in 1879, designed by New York architects William Appleton Potter and Robert Henderson Robertson.
