Christianity in Tamil Nadu

St. Thomas Mount in Chennai, the place where St. Thomas, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ, was believed to have been martyred,is an important pilgrimage site for Indian Christians.

Christian tradition holds that St. Thomas arrived in Kerala from Israel in 52 A.D. preached between 52 A.D. and 72 A.D., when he was believed to be martyred on St. Thomas Mount.

From 1779 he served with his regiment in the East Indies Campaign against Hyder Ali, joining the army under Major-General Sir Hector Munro assembled at St. Thomas Mount, Madras, in July 1780.

Pallavaram

During the 18th century, the British established a cantonment at Pallavaram, supplementary to the one at St. Thomas Mount.

Thiruvanmiyur railway station

In the return direction from Velachery, it is currently the fourth station towards Chennai Beach station, which will become the seventh station upon completion of the entire stretch up to St. Thomas Mount.


Alandur metro station

As the station acts as a transit point for two different corridors of the Chennai Metro, the two lines are constructed at two different levels at the station—the first one serving the line from Guindy towards Officers Training Academy (OTA) and Chennai airport and the second one for the line from St. Thomas Mount towards CMBT.
